Employment & Labor Law Overview
Most employees in New York are employed "at will," meaning an employer may discharge an employee for any or no reason at all. This applies even if the stated reason is untrue or mistaken leaving the employee without legal recourse.

Discrimination is Illegal!
However, there is an important exception to the “at will” doctrine: federal, state, and local anti-discrimination laws protect an employee from termination based on age, race, gender, national origin, religion, and disability.

You Might Have a Case
If you believe you have been fired, or have been denied promotions and raises on the basis of such discrimination, you have a right to file a discrimination complaint with the appropriate agency or court. You can also be assured that if you do file a complaint, the law prohibits your employer from retaliating against you for taking such an action.
